Rosell sees growth before 2013

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Sandro Rosell highlighted the importance of club members in the day-to-day running of the club and how he intends to achieve the main challenges of the new board's strategic plan by 2013 when addressing the general assembly on Saturday.

The FC Barcelona president spoke to delegates for the first time since he took over at camp Nou and outline his vision for the coming years and the role that he believes that everyone connected to the club will play. Rosell was keen to state that the starting point he has found is not good and neither is the economic situation in the short term.

Strategic plan
2010-10-16_ASAMBLEA_GENERAL_COMPROMISARIOS_002.jpgFocussing on the strategic plan laid out by his board of directors, Rosell explained that it would be "based around growth" and that would be achieve during the first phase of his plan for 2013. On the economic state of the club he assured that the turnover would be able to rise to €500 million with some positive exploitation "of around 10 per cent" with nearly €50 million in profit per season. That would then allow the level of bank debt to be reduced to "sustainable amounts".

International role
To reach an income of €500 million Rosell highlighted the internationalisation of the club and detailed a plan that will support with capitalisation of key sports and the emotional value of the Barça brand. Also, the business will look for new way to exploit and improve contracts with sponsors.

On the sporting front the president looked ahead to 2013 and stated that he wants the new Masía at the Ciutat Esportiva to be "consolidated" and work like a model that would work across the club. The aim is to reach "sporting excellence" together with the hard work of all along with "a programme of internationalisation, both formative and professional".

Member participation
2010-10-16_ASAMBLEA_GENERAL_COMPROMISARIOS_009.jpgSocially, again looking ahead to 2013, Rosell wanted to "implement an host of initiatives and resources that will allow the level of member participation and the relationship with the club to grow". For that he believes that the implementation of the Espai Barça and in the approval of more technological resources would help.

First acts
Apart from the challenges of the future, Rosell also summarised some of his first acts at the helm as the club centred on austerity and transparency of management. He insisted on being sensitive to things that affect members and the change of orientation of the club Fundació while wanting to remain centred on the area of Catalunya. He also detailed the patrimonial turnaround happening at the club, looking at stopping the reclassification of the Miniestadi, as well as clarifying that the economic situation will oblige the club to extend the time limit of the Espai Barça project. Rosell also insisted on spending on other sports and has set aside a budget of €49 million.

UEFA and Barça say no to racism

www.fcbarcelona.cat

UEFA are continuing the fight against racism this season and there will be a series of activities before FC Barcelona's game against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday evening in Camp Nou.

European football's governing body aim to eliminate the problem from the game and are highlighting the seriousness of it before each of the 16 matches in the Champions League this week. Working with partners Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE), the campaign will be given high-profile coverage as part of activities marking the Action Week.

Video message
Before Barça's game against Copenhagen a message will be shown on the giant screens in Camp Nou and matchday announcer, Manel Vich, will read a statement supporting the cause. Both sets of players will take to the field before kick off sporting t-shirts with the anti-racism message while both captains will wear special wristbands.

Blaugrana campaign
FC Barcelona are helping the anti-racism initiative as one more aspect of their alliance with UNESCO through the Blaurgana's Fundació. The Fundació have helped to take the subject to the European Parliament with a programme called 'the voice of the young against racism'. The outcome of the project led members of the European Clubs Association to include anti-racist clauses in the contracts of their players. Now the Fundació is planning a new venture with UNESCO for this season.

New Audi cars handed out

www.fcbarcelona.cat

The first team squad received new cars on Thursday lunchtime from club sponsors Audi, who distribute the vehicles at the start of every season.

2010-10-21_AUDI_31.JPGThe players were able to enjoy the sporty, dynamic new Audi A1 in an event held this lunchtime at the Castellolí circuit, when they picked up the keys to their new cars. The players also received a sporting drivers course where they were able to experience the manoeuvrability and ease of use of the new Audis, as well as the elegance of the new Audi A7 Sportback.

Audi A7 for Xavi and Piqué
The undoubted star of the new cars was the Audi A7 Sportback, Audi’s new coupé, which Xavi, Piqué, Pedro and Sergio Busquets all chose as their car for this season.

“It’s a pleasure to work with these players ”
2010-10-21_AUDI_03.JPGClub President Sandro Rosell, the Director of Audi Espanya, Manuel Caballero, Audi AG Marketing Director Lothar Korn and Volkswagen-Audi Espanya President Ludger Fretzen were amongst other club and Audi representatives at the event and Sr Caballero explained that for his company: “it is a pleasure to have players from the most successful club in recent years as ambassadors for our cars”.

Clarification

In recent weeks a number of invented interviews with the club’s players have appeared in the Daily Star and the Daily Star Sunday. FC Barcelona wish to make it known that none of these interviews are attributable to the players therein cited and also to explain to our supporters throughout the world that the information and declarations made in these articles are totally and absolutely false.

FC Barcelona has officially sent the media outlets concerned a formal complaint and warned them that it will not allow any further situations like this to be repeated. Should this happen, the club will not hesitate to act in defence of its own image and the honour of its players.

This club has worked closely with the media and will continue to do so, as we believe it to be a very important part of the spreading of information about sport and in particular about football.

The willingness to work openly and with transparency forms part of our basic working philosophy. To this end, the club has its own official channels of communications which every day provide news of the club’s activities and also provide ideal communication channels whereby the players and other club staff can make contact with the members and fans and get their messages across.

Squad commits to fill Nou Camp

http://www.fcbarcelona.cat/

“We Give Everything” is the slogan that fronts the latest campaign by the club for ticket sales for the 2010/11 campaign, which is being launched this Thursday. The players are the front men for the campaign.

With the start of the new season, the players are again fully committed to give their all for the team on the pitch and that commitment is echoed in the campaign slogan, “We Give Everything”.
Commitment on both sides
2010-10-18_ENTRENO_48.JPGThe aim is to get the fans to join the players in their dedication and the “We Give Everything” slogan, as used last season, aims to stress the implication of the team. This season, the players won’t be wearing the tattoos they did in last year’s campaign – the images this year are of the players faces and shirts full of sweat.

The players show their commitment through a number of scenes of them working and training to show the effort behind every game.

First three players
2010-10-18_ENTRENO_40.JPGPedro, Iniesta and Messi are the first group of players to feature in the campaign. All three of them express their commitment to defending the club and ask for the same support from the fans. The following players will soon be taking over from those three, with Xavi, Puyol, Villa, Alves, Piqué and Valdés all to appear.

Wide distribution
iniesta.jpgThe success of the campaign will be based on the players’ ability to convince the fans to fill the stadium for every game and will be shown on BarcaTV, the club website, general and sports newspapers ,TV, radio, advertising hoardings and the advertising space around the stadium.

Rosell: “team and fans deserve a 10”

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Club President Sandro Rosell praised the Nou Camp crowd at the game tonight, claiming their great support was a real factor in the team’s performance.

Following the convincing win over Seville, Sandro Rosell was quick to praise the attitude of the Nou Camp fans who filled the stadium despite this being a holiday weekend in Catalonia.

Fans inspire the team
2010-10-30_FCB_-_SEVILLA_FC_001.jpgAccording to the Club President: “the team and the fans deserve a 10. The fans got behind the team even more than they normally do and that really helps the team to work well. The team inspires the fans and the fans inspire the team!”

“Pep was right about Villa”
This was David Villa’s night as he put to bed any doubts about his goal scoring with two great strikes and the President insisted that Pep Guardiola was right this week when he assured the fans that Villa would soon be back amongst the goals.

Tough month ahead
2010-10-30_FCB-SEVILLA_-_LLOTJA-13.JPGThere’s a tough November ahead of the team, with some big games, including the visit of Real Madrid, but Sr Rosell made it clear that: “Barça have this kind of pressure all year round. We have to focus on ourselves move forward, keep on winning and piling up the points”.

Copenhagen
Barça’s next test is the game in Copenhagen in midweek and the President commented: “it won’t be an easy game, but we are confident. The team is fitter – it’s working better and improving. A good result in Denmark will give us peace of mind about classifying for the next round”.

Team to support charity initiative in Denmark

www.fcbarcelona.cat

The Barça first team will hand over signed shirts from Tuesday’s game with Copenhagen so that they can be auctioned off for Peter Schmeichel’s initiative to fight breast cancer.

The players are not just travelling to Denmark to book a place in the next round of the Champions League, they are also going to make a contribution to the ex-Manchester United keeper’s charity initiative against breast cancer. The party will be taking three shirts signed by the squad and boss Josep Guardiola and will hand them over to Schmeichel via the international delegate of the club’s Social Commission Josep Maria Barnils.

Fund raiser
The shirts will be auctioned off via the webpage www.lauritz.com in an auction which is set to last from November 2nd to 7th, according to Schmeichel who made the announcement at a gala dinner organised by Danish TV who are also collaborating with the initiative.

Shirts to be handed over after the match
Once Tuesday’s game has finished, Josep Maria Barnils will hand over the shirts on behalf of the Club to the Danish TV. In this way, the team will be joining the solidarity already shown by a number of Danish professional clubs in support of the imitative.

Térmens, new supporters clubs ombudsman

www.fcbarcelona.cat

The new supporters clubs ombudsman is looking forward to his new responsibilities in support of the supporters club movement.

On Monday, October 25, the Board accepted Ramon Térmens as the supporters clubs ombudsman. This newly created figure is yet another display of the new administration’s desire to strengthen its bonds with the supporters clubs.

In an interview with www.fcbarcelona.cat, the new ombudsman said that “personally this means being able to work on one of the most important issues for maintaining Barça’s independence and sustainability in the future. This project gives value to the supporters club movement as one that reflects the Barça passion, both in its geographic extension and in the way it promotes the Barça name.”

Mediating role
2010-10-09_DESFILE_ESTANDARTES_PB_004.jpgThe ombudsman knows he has an important job to do, which entails “responsibility for overseeing a good understanding between supporters clubs, as ensuring honest and efficient compliance with the agreements they establish with Barça. These agreements are always in coordination with the Supporters Clubs Council, the former Advisory Committee, and the parties implied”, explained Térmens.

Impulse for the future
Térmens feels this will generate a new impetus for the movement as a whole. “I think it’s fantastic. I understand that it means reinforcement of the supporters club movement in all of its dimensions and responds to the board’s requirements. It means welcoming all Barça fans.” He ended by saying he intends to oversee the supporters club movement benefit from the new Century XXI project.

Pope John Paul II visited us 28 years ago

Pope Benedict XVI arrives in Barcelona today, where tomorrow he shall be solemnly consecrating the Sagrada Família temple. This is 28 years after his predecessor, the late John Paul II gave a mass at the Camp Nou to 120,000 believers.

On November 7, 1982 the Barça stadium witnessed a historic event, the first time a Pontiff had given mass in Catalonia. John Paul II’s visit was part of a wider tour of Spain, his first since becoming Pope in 1978.

Huge crowds
EL_PAPA_AL_CAMP_NOU_-_1982.jpgThe Pope’s visit began with a visit to the Benedictine Abbey at Montserrat. By midday, he had arrived in the city and headed for the Sagrada Familia, where he recited the Angelus. After that, he went to the Cathedral, passing along Carrer Sardenya, Carrer Aragó, Passeig de Gràcia, Ronda de Sant Pere, Plaça Urquinaona and Via Laietana. He blessed the huge crowd that had gathered in the Cathedral Square before going to visit the Archbishop. After lunch, at about 15.30, he left for Avinguda Maria Cristina where he was greeted by a million people as he made his way into the Camp Nou for his next religious duty.

Mass in the Camp Nou
MISSA_AL_CAMP_NOU.JPGSadly, the weather was less welcoming, and under pouring rain, a congregation of 120,000 gathered on the recently extended Camp Nou terraces. John Paul II entered the stadium at 18.30 via the south goal, and blessed the adoring crowds. The Pope stood on a 600 m2 covered podium in the middle of the pitch. A huge 3000 m2 scarlet and yellow carpet was decorated with yellow flowers.

MISA_PAPA_CAMP_NOU-1982.jpgTo the right of the huge altar assembled in front of the grandstand was a choir of two thousand conducted by the director of the Coral Sant Jordi, Oriol Martorell and a group of priests who later gave communion. To the left, some seven hundred sick people awaited the blessing of the Holy Father, while in the Palau Blaugrana, a further 4,500 sick, disabled and elderly people followed the service from afar. Before beginning the Eucharist, the Pope said “peace be with you” in the Catalan language, which certainly impressed the congregation. The stadium fell into silence for the mass, which ended with a singing of “Virolai”.

The Camp Nou box of honour gathered a number of local authorities and FC Barcelona directors. These included the President of the Generalitat, Jordi Pujol; the assistant councillor to the Presidency of the Generalitat, Miquel Coll i Alentorn and the Mayor of Barcelona, Narcís Serra. The FCB president, Josep Lluís Núñez and his wife enjoyed seats of honour near to the podium and were among the twenty people that received communion directly from the Pope.

SIGNATURA_LLIBRE_DxHONOR.JPGThe Club presented the Holy Father with a package of surgical materials to be sent to the Third World. The Pope signed the club’s Book of Honour and presented a rosary to Josep Lluís Núñez. John Paul II was also presented with club membership card number 108,000. Years later, in November 2001, the update of the club register meant the Pope’s number became 103,350, which was the card he still had when he died on April 2, 2005.

V.I.P.s in the directors’ box

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Former Barça players and the synchronised swimming team were among the guests invited to watch the Blaugrana play Ceuta from the director’s box alongside the football stars not chosen to play.

Pep Guardiola’s side took on their Segunda B visitors for the second leg of their Copa del Rey tie and there were several well-known faces looking on. Ex-Barça striker Migueli, who was born in Ceuta and now works for the Camp Nou outfit, enjoyed the game. “One is the team from where I was born and the other gave me everything,” he explained. “I have divided loyalties, but I hope that Barça wins.”

Record holder
2010-11-10_FCB_-_CEUTA_0004.JPGXavi Hernández is hot on the heels of Migueli’s all-time appearance record for FC Barcelona. “It is normal that someone will take the record because people are pushing all the time and it is only an anecdote to have the record number of games,” he continued. “I would be happy if Xavi took it though and I was second, that would not be bad.”

With Migueli in the director’s box were other former Barça stars from the 1980’s such as Paco Clos and Juan Carlos Pérez Rojo, while Andoni Zubizarreta was in his usual seat as the club’s director of professional football.

Synchronised visit
2010-11-10_FCB_-_CEUTA_0003.JPGAnna Tarrés led the national synchronised swimming team as they took their positions in the esteemed position. The swimmers, who won four silver medals at the recent European games in Budapest, organised their training sessions for the week to allow them to be able to attend. “To come to the stadium is a bit different for us because our days are constant work and something like this brings us even closer,” Tarrés said.

Guardiola one victory away from 100

Barça could record their 100th win under Pep Guardiola on Wednesday when they take on Ceuta in the Spanish Cup. The win against Getafe on Sunday was the 99th since Guardiola took over in the summer of 2008, a figure that represents a 71% win rate ove

Guardiola always insists that the team have to take it one game at a time and that attitude has seen him win 99 matches and take a total of eight titles in just over two years .

71,73% wins
2010-09-19_PARTIDO_WEB_20.JPGThe win against Getafe was Guardiola’s 138th game in charge of the team over six different competitions, in which he’s recorded a 71,73% success rate, with 18,84 % of the games drawn and just 9,4% ending in defeat.

Historic successes
2009-12-16_PARTIDO_091.JPGThose wins have of course helped to win titles and Guardiola’s team have so far lifted eight, but for each of those titles, there has to be a special game we all remember.

_M3_9763.JPGIn the league it’s probably the 2-6 win at the Bernabeu that the team achieved on May 2nd 2009, whilst the Rome final of the Champions League, or maybe Iniesta’s heroics at Stamford Bridge in the semi finals are what most stick in the fans’ memory. Then there is the 4-1 win in the Spanish Cup Final in Valencia against Bilbao, or Pedro’s goal in the Super Cup, or the World Club Cup........

Leo and Pep, the perfect combination
2010-09-09_ENTRENAMIENTO_FCB_005.jpgAnd if the team are on the brink of a century of wins under the boss, it must be down in a large part to the contribution of Leo Messi, who with his 100th goal under Guardiola, which he scored against Copenhagen, sealed the great combination between the two that has proved such a success story for the club.

Best League team of the decade

www.fcbarcelona.cat

The Centre d’Investigacions d’Història i Estadística del Futbol Espanyol (CIHEFE) has designated FC Barcelona as the best club in the Spanish League during the first decade of this century.

The CIHEFE has looked back over the first decade of the century and totting up its points has given Barça 1,630 against second placed Real Madrid with 1,482.

Criteria
2009-09-22_PARTIDO_21.JPGThe CIHEFE points system is based not on titles won, but rather on points taken for wins or draws in the Spanish and European competitions, not taking into account any other factor, such as winning competitions, the club budget or value of the squad.

12 titles in 10 years
Although the number of titles wasn’t taken into account by the Centre, Barça are the team who’ve won most competitions in the last ten years, taking a total of 12, seven with Guardiola and five under Rijkaard, two ahead of second place Real Madrid.

This summer’s Spanish Super Cup win counts as the first title of the next decade –but certainly it won’t be the last!

Two games and Official Photo this week

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Barça face a La Liga and Cup double this week, with games on Wednesday and Saturday, as well as the official squad photo, scheduled for Thursday.

With two games in four days, the squad trained on Monday, and they will be under Guardiola’s orders every day this week, with just Sunday as a break.

Cup night on Wednesday at the Nou Camp
2010-10-26_PARTIDO_19.JPGThe first of the two games at the Nou Camp this week will be on Wednesday when Ceuta visit for the second leg of their Spanish Cup tie. Barça go into the game on the back of a two nil win in North Africa a fortnight ago. The squad will begin preparations for the Cup game on Tuesday, when Guardiola will be without seven of the players he’s decided to rest - Alves, Puyol, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa and Messi, who will be replaced by B team players.

Official Photo on Thursday
The day after the Cup game, the squad will assemble before training for the 2010/11 Official Photo and then start planning for Saturday’s game against third placed Villarreal which kicks off at 22.00 on Saturday night at the Nou Camp. The squad will train again on Friday and then behind closed doors at the Stadium at lunchtime on matchday.

17 picked to face Ceuta

17 players have been picked for the cup second leg. Twelve are from the first team and five from the reserves.

In order of shirt number, the players are Valdés, Puyol, Bojan, Messi, Pinto, Mascherano, Keita, Pedro, Milito, Maxwell, Adriano, Abidal, Nolito, Sergi Roberto, Thiago, Bartra and Dos Santos.

Rest for seven
After a Monday session in which the Barça players recovered from the exertions of the game away to Getafe, today’s training at Sant Joan Despí was more about the cup match on Wednesday. Seven men were allowed the day off, namely Dani Alves, Carles Puyol, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, David Villa and Leo Messi.

Seventeen on the field
2010-11-09_ENTRENO_35.JPGAlong absent from the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper were Víctor Valdés and Gerard Piqué, who worked out in the gym, meaning there were seventeen on the pitch, ten from the first team and six from Barça B. But one of these, the injured Jeffren Suárez, worked in isolation with a fitness coach.

Six reserves
The six reserve players were Jordi Masip, Marc Bartra, Thiago Alcántara, Sergi Roberto, Dos Santos and Nolito. Five of these already trained with the first team on Monday, but this time Rubén Miño was replaced by Masip.

They started work at 11.00 and the session was entirely focused on the Copa del Rey encounter with Ceuta at the Camp Nou on Wednesday (22.00).

Puyol approaches the 500 mark

www.fcbarcelona.cat

On Wednesday, in the cup game against Ceuta, Carles Puyol could reach the historic landmark of five hundred official games with FC Barcelona.

Everybody knows that Carles Puyol is one of the best defenders the club has ever had, and one of the most lauded centre backs in the game right now. Aged 32, and now in his twelfth season with the club, the team captain could make it to half a thousand matches against Ceuta.

102 in Champions League

WEB_13.jpgOnly two players, Migueli (549) and Xavi (540) can claim to have done likewise. And of the 500 games played by Puyol, not only has he played 338 in La Liga, but also 102 in the Champions League, showing just what an important asset he is. He has lifted the last two Champions League trophies.

The 499 games to date also feature 38 in the Cup, 9 in the UEFA Cup, 6 in the Spanish Super Cup, 4 in the Clubs World Cup and 2 in the Spanish Super Cup.

Special goals

rm-fcb26_x12x.jpgPuyol has always been famed for his dedication and last-ditch tackles. Goalscoring is far from his most important responsibility, yet he has been on target at some key moments. He has nine goals in all, and the best remembered are the one from an overhead kick nine years ago against Tenerife, a side he has scored against twice, his header at the Bernabéu on the day of the famous 2-6 and another similar goal this year against Valencia (2-1).

Guardiola: “We don’t throw games away here”

Pep Guardiola is not treating Ceuta as a done deal despite winning the away leg, but instead intends to give the match all the attention it deserves.

“I don’t want to fall into the trap of thinking we’ve already done the job” said the FC Barcelona manager ahead of Wednesday’s match. Barça may have won 2-0 away against a lower category team but Guardiola insists that “we don’t throw games away here” and that he and his players will be wanting to perform as well as they can.

Seriousness
It is crucial for Barça to play this game like any other and keep the right rhythm going. “We could think we have already done it, or we could think that we have got to do it. We have to play Copa del Rey matches seriously” said Guardiola, adding that although the game with Ceuta shouldn’t be too difficult, “it does involve a very high risk”.

No need for motivation
2010-11-09_ENTRENO_28.JPGAsked whether he needs to specially motivate his players for games like the one with Ceuta compared with others, Guardiola was emphatic. “They love playing and love football. These boys love playing football and as it’s what they enjoy, they’ll go out there and make an effort”. Also, with the game kicking off at 22.00, he knows there aren’t likely to be too many fans in the stadium, but he promised “a goo game for those who do come”.

Sergi Roberto, man for the future
Among the five reserve players picked by Guardiola for the game with Ceuta is Sergi Roberto. The Barça has praised this player, about whom he said “his future perspectives are very good indeed. He’s a youngster Luis Enrique has a lot of confidence in, and that’s important in the reserves”.

Nolito told to fight
2010-11-09_ENTRENO_18.JPGGuardiola also spoke about Nolito, one of the stars of the Barça B side who is knocking on the first team door. Some have suggested that the player might be leaving, but Guardiola has said “I’d recommend him to fight to stay here. There is always a time to leave this place but there are few places better for him right now. … he should keep playing well and fighting for a place here.” He reminded listeners that Barça is a club that likes to give its youth players a chance.

Rested players train

http://www.fcbarcelona.cat/

The FC Barcelona players not included in the squad for the Copa del Rey encounter rose early on Wednesday morning and headed to the Ciutat Esportiva for training.

Seven first team players were joined by six others from the youth ranks as Gerard Piqué, Dani Alves, Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and David Villa worked along with the recovering Jeffren Suárez.

Rubén Miño, Oier Olazábal, Edu Oriol and Cristian Tello stepped up from the B side while Rafa Alcántara and Gerard Deulofeu were promoted from the Juvenil A team.

Vilanova coaches

Pep Guardiola’s assistant Tito Vilanova oversaw the session and put the players through the usual warm-up and circuit routines before playing a game of seven against six on a small pitch. The training lasted just over an hour.

Bojan: "One never forgets how to score"

Bojan Krkic scored his first official goal of the season in the 5-1 triumph over Ceuta on Wednesday and hopes that it will boost his confidence.

The striker found the net in the Copa del Rey win in Camp Nou after missing a first half penalty. “It is an important goal, especially after the penalty,” he said. “I needed that to be calm. Goals always bring confidence.”

2010-11-10_FCB_-_AD_CEUTA_009.jpgPep Guardiola remained faithful to Bojan and the forward was delighted. “The confidence of the coach in me has been fundamental,” he added. “I always want to score because it gives me strength to keep going. One never forgets how to score though.”

Dedication
After scoring Bojan chose a specific celebration and stated afterwards why. “The dedication of the arch was for Jonathan,” he explained.

Below is what some of the other players had tos ay:

Nolito:
2010-11-10_PARTIDO_02.JPG“It was great and a dream come true. It is the best thing to have happened to me at Barça. I am very pleased with the win and the goal.”

“The experience in the first team has been great. I am enjoying it as if I was a kid. I have to continue working and then see what happens.”

“I have the confidence of both Luis Enrique and Pep (Guardiola). My place is with the B team and I will continue to work hard there.”

“I have been a Barça fan since I was young and I want to stay. That is my aim.”

Mascherano:
2010-11-10_FCB_-_AD_CEUTA_020.jpg“I am pleased with the victory. People thought it would be easy against them, but I thought we played a serious game. We went about things calmly.”

“My role is more defensive than offensive but in this team I can participate more because we have so much possession. I want to make the right passes and every day I am learning the coach’s ideas.”

Sergi Roberto:

2010-11-10_PARTIDO_41.JPG“I have to work hard game-by-game to continue doing the best I possibly can.”

“It is important to maintain focus in games like this. Sometimes your rhythm can be affected if you do not play more.”

“I was great to go on and be given a good reception at Camp Nou.”

“I want to cherish that moment. Whoever plays for Barça wants that.”

“Everyone at Barça wants to reach the first team. We have to work because the chances will come while Pep is the coach.”

“To play alongside the best players in the world helps to go into the game well.”

Thiago:
2010-11-10_FCB_-_AD_CEUTA_004.jpg“I was only missing a goal. We have had two great chances but I hope that I will be able to go closer and closer to the goal as time goes on.”

“One has to be self-critical or you cannot grow.”

Pinto:
“I had a relatively quiet time and that was a good sign of how the team was.”

Roger Bogunyà

FC Barcelona eased into the next round of the Copa del Rey with a 5-1 triumph over Ceuta in their second leg encounter on Wednesday evening thanks to goals from Nolito, Gaby Milito, Pedro, Bojan Krkic and Lionel Messi.
After winning the opening encounter by two goals the Blaugrana progressed 7-1 won aggregate and they rewarded the 38,971 who braved a chilly midweek evening to cheer them on with a goalfest and a game of great intensity. Having won the first meeting between the teams coach Pep Guardiola chose to name B team starlets Marc Bartra, Thiago Alcantára and Nolito in the starting line-up and the choice paid dividends as they showed that they could cope comfortably with the step up once again.

Spectacular start
Barça began the game clearly proving that they were keen to put the outcome of the tie beyond doubt and it was Nolito that broke the deadlock after just two minutes as he showed great skill to score. The same player then went close four minutes later as he shone and showed just why Guardiola is keen to give him a chance at the highest level. It was Nolito then turned provider as his corner was met by Milito and he beat the keeper before wheeling away to celebrate.

Red and penalty
The level of play did not drop despite the four-goal cushion across the two legs and Gilson looked to restore some pride for the visitors as he sent a shot goalwards only for it to cannon back off the crossbar. Moments later and the drama was at the other end as Bojan drew Vítor Moreno and he was shown a red card after giving away a penalty. The Blaugrana forward chose to take the spot-kick himself, but he then saw his effort hit the woodwork and bounce away. Ceuta did indeed step up their game and actually managed to find a way through the Barça rearguard when Guzmán found the net.

Milito was then reduced to tears as he suffered an injury that meant he to make an early withdrawal and Éric Abidal was sent on to replace him.

Pedro and Bojan
After the break Barça stepped up another gear and Pedro made it 3-1 with a fine effort from the right just five minutes into the second period. Bojan made up for his penalty miss in the 65 minute as he was set up by Messi, who had entered the fray in place of Pedro. The Argentinian then added to his incredible goal tally for Barça with the home team's fifth of the night in the 67th minute.

Sergi Roberto
Sergi Roberto was given a chance to show what he can do as he replaced Maxwell and the youngster made his mark on his first-team debut in midfield. With Guardiola keen to promote from within and all the homegrown talent did well and will have gained great experience from their appearance alongside the first-team regulars.
